BARLOW SUBSTATION
Location: Quesnel, BC
Scope: Powerline Interconnection
Project Owner: BC Hydro
Prime Contractor: K2 Electric Ltd.
Contract Duration: 7 Months
Project Value: $2.5M
In 2024, K2 Electric successfully delivered complete civil and electrical scopes for the Barlow Interconnection Project, a critical BC Hydro initiative to improve regional transmission infrastructure. Civil activities included mass excavation, granular base installation, structural concrete foundations, cable trenches, and placement of both standard and custom steel structures. Our team also managed installation of embedded hardware, concrete equipment pads, crushed rock surfacing, and full site restoration. All work was completed in accordance with BC Hydro’s SP2 specifications, with detailed as-built documentation submitted upon project completion.
The electrical scope encompassed full removal and replacement of 60 kV buswork and grounding systems, installation of 69kV disconnect switches, circuit breaker, capacitive voltage transformers and surge arresters, in addition to the installation of H-Frame dead end structure, bus stirrups, lightning protection, and grounding mats. K2 installed direct-buried duct banks, terminated power and control cables, and supported in-field equipment inspections. We also completed P&C panel replacements, SCADA integration, alarm systems, and inter-panel wiring as part of the protection and control package. Close coordination with BC Hydro was required to ensure safe equipment energization and compliance with commissioning protocols. The project was delivered safely, on schedule, and with precision.
