SANDSPIT GENERATING STATION

Location: Sandspit, BC
Scope: Diesel Generator Upgrade

Project Owner: BC Hydro

Prime Contractor: K2 Electric Ltd.

Contract Duration: 3 Months

Project Value: $3M

In 2017, K2 Electric completed a major upgrade to the Sandspit Diesel Generating Station on Haida Gwaii, one of BC’s most remote and environmentally sensitive communities. This multi-disciplinary project included civil, electrical and mechanical scopes to support the installation of two new mobile generating units within the station’s northeast compound. Our team completed extensive regrading, granular subgrade development, structural pad construction, drainage system installation, and contaminated soil removal. All construction materials and equipment were barged to site, requiring strategic staging and transport coordination.

Electrically, K2 installed new H-frames, grounding systems, lighting, and telecom cabling, while replacing overhead circuits, poles, and disconnect switches. Work also included integration of new equipment with existing infrastructure, requiring precise tie-ins and adherence to control and protection protocols. K2 supported mechanical upgrades, including removal of obsolete piping and installation of new fuel systems, along with pressure testing of all modified lines. All work was conducted under an Environmental Management Plan (EMP), with Indigenous engagement and environmental oversight playing key roles. The project was completed with a strong safety and environmental track record.
